How to Spot the Difference Between a Fake Diamond and a Real One
Knowing how to spot the difference between a fake diamond and a real one can save you from disappointment and help you make an informed purchase. While synthetic diamonds, like lab-grown diamonds, share the same physical properties as natural ones, fake diamonds (such as cubic zirconia) don’t measure up in quality or value. Here are some easy ways to tell if a diamond is the real deal.
1. The Fog Test
Hold the diamond close to your mouth and breathe on it like you would to fog up a mirror. A real diamond will disperse heat instantly, so the fog should disappear right away. If it stays foggy for a few seconds, it’s probably a fake.
2.Check for Imperfections
Real diamonds usually have small imperfections, known as inclusions, which you can see under a jeweler's loupe or magnifying glass. A perfect diamond is rare, so if the stone looks too flawless, it could be fake or lab-grown.
3. Water Test
Drop the diamond into a glass of water. A real diamond is very dense and will sink to the bottom. A fake one, like cubic zirconia, may float or sink slowly.
4. Light Reflection
A real diamond reflects light in a unique way. Inside the diamond, you should see Gray and white light (brilliance), while outside, you should see flashes of rainbow colors (fire). Fake diamonds often have excessive rainbow reflections inside, making them look overly colorful.
5. Consult a Professional
The best way to be certain is to have the diamond checked by a jeweler. They can use special tools to confirm whether the stone is real or synthetic.
By using these simple tests, you can get a good idea of whether a diamond is genuine or not before making a big purchase.
